CAMPBELL, California, August 8, 2023 – Phoenix Technologies, a leading independent firmware supplier for PCs and computing devices, announces that Dr. Richard (Dick) Wilkins has been appointed co-chair of the UEFI SBOM Working Group.
Dr. Wilkins is Phoenix’ Principal Technology Liaison executive who is responsible for Phoenix’ relationship with international standards groups. He is a UEFI board member.
The SBOM group focuses on the development of industry-wide standards and guidelines for generating and managing software bill of materials (SBOM) for UEFI-based platforms. The SBOM approach is instrumental in improving supply chain security, enhancing software component transparency, and fortifying overall cybersecurity resilience. Just like a bill of materials in manufacturing, which lists all the parts and materials needed to build a product, an SBOM provides a comprehensive inventory of the software components used in a particular software project.
Dr. Wilkins also participates in the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) SBOM Working Groups. He acts as a liaison between these groups and the UEFI SBOM group. CISA has recognized the importance of SBOM as a crucial component in improving cybersecurity and supply chain risk management. The US Federal Government is actively developing guidance and polices intended to push industry forward in this critical area.
“Phoenix Technologies is proud to lead this crucial SBOM effort. It is consistent with our leading industry position and enduring commitment to providing the most secure UEFI firmware possible,” said Dick Wilkins. “An accurate SBOM can be part of a quick and automated solution that can identify if a particular section of flawed code is present in the firmware image. It can also be part of a solution that confirms if that code, present in a system, is used in a way that exposes the reported vulnerability or if it is used at all,” Wilkins added.
